Iconic Shelter T16 Mandalika

Marshal Shelter T16 is a trackside architectural design project located at Turn 16 of the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit in Kuta Mandalika, Lombok, Indonesia. Designed by Tata Tata Architects in 2023, the project explores how a small motorsport safety facility can combine practical functionality with a distinctive architectural identity inspired by the traditional Sasak culture of Lombok.

The marshal shelter is designed to accommodate track marshals responsible for monitoring racing activities and assisting with incident response during motorsport events, including MotoGP. Positioned at Turn 16, an important section of the racing circuit, the shelter serves as a designated space for personnel who play an essential role in maintaining track safety. From monitoring racing conditions to responding to crashes and potential hazards, the presence of track marshals is a fundamental part of international motorsport operations.

The architectural concept of Marshal Shelter T16 takes inspiration from the traditional Sasak Lumbung, a distinctive rice granary that forms an important part of Lombok's vernacular architecture. Its recognizable curved roof silhouette becomes the main reference for the shelter's architectural expression. By reinterpreting this traditional form into a contemporary structure, the design introduces a familiar element of local cultural heritage into the technologically advanced environment of the Mandalika International Circuit.

Although relatively small in scale, a marshal shelter requires careful consideration of its location, accessibility, visibility, and protection from weather conditions. The architectural approach considers the needs of personnel working beside an active racing circuit, where the ability to observe track conditions and access designated response areas is particularly important. The shelter is envisioned as a practical supporting facility that provides shade and protection from Lombok's tropical climate while maintaining its recognizable architectural character.

One of the main design considerations was creating an iconic structure without introducing unnecessary complexity. The distinctive Lumbung-inspired roof establishes the visual identity of the building, while the overall composition remains compact and functional. This approach allows the marshal shelter to express a connection to local architectural traditions without losing its purpose as part of the circuit's supporting infrastructure.

The Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit is one of Indonesia's major international motorsport venues, located within the Mandalika tourism development area in southern Lombok. Surrounded by coastal landscapes and rolling hills, the circuit presents a unique setting where modern sports infrastructure meets the natural and cultural character of the island. Marshal Shelter T16 explores how even the smallest structures within this environment can contribute to a more recognizable architectural identity.

The project also highlights the importance of supporting facilities in large-scale sports architecture. While grandstands, paddock buildings, and racing tracks often receive the most architectural attention, smaller structures such as marshal posts remain essential to circuit operations. Their design presents an opportunity to improve the working environment of personnel while contributing to the overall visual composition of the venue.

For Tata Tata Architects, Marshal Shelter T16 represents an exploration of contemporary sports facility architecture through the reinterpretation of local building traditions. The project demonstrates how traditional Sasak architectural elements can be adapted to modern functional requirements, creating a relationship between cultural heritage and the international identity of MotoGP Mandalika.

Completed at the architectural design stage in 2023, Marshal Shelter T16 reflects the potential of small-scale architecture to create a meaningful contribution to a larger development. Through its compact form, functional purpose, and distinctive Sasak-inspired roof, the project aims to establish a recognizable architectural identity for a trackside marshal shelter at the Mandalika International Circuit.
