Kava Coffee & Eatery 2.0: Modern Traditional Café Design in Mataram, Lombok

At Kava Coffee & Eatery 2.0, simple forms, bold terracotta, textured walls, and greenery come together in an approach we call modern traditional. For this café design in Mataram, Lombok, we wanted to combine a contemporary atmosphere with the warmth of wood and familiar spaces for gathering.

This coffee shop renovation brings together Tata Tata Architects, Kava, and PT Varindo Lombok Inti, Lombok’s largest residential developer. The collaboration explores how a renewed setting can support both the experience of visiting a café and the practical needs of running one.

The outdoor conversation area is a central part of Phase 1. Curved seating follows the edges of planted areas, creating places to sit together around small tables. Black chairs, grey stones, and a tree within the courtyard complete the setting. We imagined this as a place where a quick coffee could turn into a longer conversation.

Our terracotta palette takes a bold direction, leaning towards red. It runs across walls, built-in seating, and planters, giving the courtyard a consistent identity. Against green foliage and dark furniture, the reddish terracotta becomes the defining colour of the space.

For the walls, we used a textured Mutiara cement finish. Its surface adds detail to the simple planes, catching light and shadow as the angle of sunlight changes. The texture gives depth to the colour and invites a closer look at surfaces that might otherwise pass unnoticed.

We also paid close attention to the wood tones during material selection and purchasing. The brown shade we chose has an unusual character that adds another layer to the palette. Alongside the terracotta and darker elements, it contributes to the warmth of the modern traditional atmosphere. Warm lighting completes the relationship between colour, texture, and material.

The architectural forms remain simple, with exploration focused on curves, proportions, and the way different elements meet. Curved benches sit alongside straight wall lines and window frames, while patterned ventilation blocks add detail to the courtyard boundary. These relationships give the space variety while keeping the overall composition clear.

The client personally selected the landscape plants. Their choices bring a personal connection to the courtyard and make the landscape part of the collaboration. Greenery sits between the seating and terracotta surfaces, helping the building and outdoor café seating feel like parts of one setting.

The wider design considers different reasons for visiting Kava, from family meals and casual meetings to time spent working on a laptop. The planned programme includes an outdoor family area, a shared workspace, a kitchen, a roasting area with a visual connection to visitors, and a drive-through for quick purchases.

What we are sharing here is Phase 1. Phase 2 will focus on the main building, opening up further opportunities to explore the architecture. We are particularly excited about this next part, where the modern traditional character can develop more fully. The courtyard offers an introduction to the broader experience taking shape at Kava.

Thank you to Kava and PT Varindo Lombok Inti for the trust and collaboration throughout this process.
