AI+BL House — Inside Out Living in Lombok

AI+BL House is a modern tropical family residence at Phoenix Residence, Lombok, Indonesia. Designed around the concept of “Inside Out,” the house brings the spaciousness of outdoor living into its interior through a generous void, expansive glazing, and gardens across different levels. The pool and surrounding landscape establish the main orientation of the home.

The pool sits at an intermediate level between the ground and upper ground floors, allowing both levels to engage with the same outdoor setting. Almost every main room faces this landscape. A communal lounge above the carport makes use of the space over the parking area, creating a gathering place with views across the water toward the house.

The ground floor accommodates extended family gatherings. A large dining area is supported by a generous preparation kitchen designed to serve meals for larger occasions. Service spaces are grouped along the edge of the plan while remaining closely connected to the kitchen and dining room. A private prayer room occupies a more secluded area, and parking accommodates up to four cars.

On the upper ground floor, the main living and dining spaces form an open centre beneath a large void. The resulting atrium-like volume gives the interior a sense of openness, while glass boundaries maintain views toward the trees and pool landscape. An elevated garden, conceived as an “upperyard,” brings outdoor space directly alongside the family’s daily activities.

The master suite connects directly with the pool area and is designed to offer the comfort of a hotel retreat within the home. The adjacent children’s bedroom provides generous space for rest and play, keeping the family’s private rooms close together.

The next floor contains two additional bedrooms with a villa-like atmosphere. A games room accommodates gaming and billiards, while a private office provides a quieter setting for work. A west-facing gym offers a place to exercise with views toward the sunset.

The rooftop extends the home’s communal spaces into an open-air setting. It provides room to gather with friends, spend time as a couple, or enjoy a quiet moment alone. Its relationship with the evening sky adds another experience to the sequence of spaces throughout the house.

A curved staircase connects the levels, making movement through the home part of its architectural character. Wood is used prominently to bring warmth and a natural quality to the interior and exterior. A restrained neutral palette complements these textures and is intended to remain relevant as the family’s life evolves.
